Blu-ray Sales Down

A recent report from ABI Research noted that many consumers simply don’t see the picture quality difference between a Blu-ray movie and a standard DVD. Overall, consumers also don’t see a need for change at the moment. According to NPD Group sales are down as well.

From January to February Blu-ray standalone player sales fell 40 percent. It seems standard DVD player sales are still doing well despite Blu-ray winning the format war against HD-DVD.

Blu-ray players currently cost more than $300 and the selection of movies available is quite limited compared to DVD (of course). Once the price of Blu-ray players drop below $200, more titles become available, and more consumers purchase higher resolution HD televisions, then we will see a major upturn in the sales of this format.

Until then, standard DVDs will be around for a while.
